Your engagement photoshoot is about more than just getting cute photos. It’s about showcasing who you two are, right now. Celebrating this small, but exciting, moment in time. Capturing your love for each other in a setting that’s fun and stress-free. So, let this be your sign from a Wisconsin engagement photographer: your engagement photos don’t have to follow any rules. As long as your gallery feels like you and is full of meaning, it’s a success. And that’s exactly what Grace and Josh did, and their gallery is bringing all the best engagement photo ideas.

Grace and Josh wanted their engagement photos to actually feel like them, so they took the time to really think about what they love about each other, what they love doing together, and what makes them the couple that they really are.
So, they incorporated small, intentional details to make sure that they honored those things. They brought their dog, Greg, their favorite beer (from a local brewery called New Glarus), and wore outfits that felt both comfortable and expressive of who they are.
And those things? They let them show off the uniqueness of their relationship. Who they really are. And that makes all the difference in your gallery.
When you’re comfortable being yourself in front of the camera, that’s when we’ll get the shots that feel like you. No stiff posing, no feeling awkward. Just like it’s a date that you two are on, like there isn’t even a camera there.
Their location played a huge role in this. We hit a wide-open field in Madison that was just the three of us, and it allowed connection and movement, and gave us lighting that felt God-given.
It was important to Grace and Josh that we honor the Midwest, and this space definitely helped us achieve that. There’s just something about drinking a beer in a wildflower field that feels like home.

So, if you’re looking for engagement photo ideas that feel effortless to you and intentional to who you two are, here are some ideas I always give my couples:
The location is what sets the tone for your whole session, so choosing somewhere that feels true to who you are is important. Whether it’s a first date spot, on family land, or somewhere that you two frequent, adding meaning in through the atmosphere will automatically make you feel more comfortable in front of the camera and more like yourself.

Like Grace and Josh’s session showed us, bringing things that you two have a shared love for (whether it’s your pup or your favorite beer) is a fun and easy way to show off who you two are as a couple. Here are some of my other favorite ideas for things to bring to your engagement session:

The best advice I can give you as a Wisconsin engagement photographer is to wear something that you actually feel good in. Not what the internet tells you you should wear, not what the “rules” say.
Comfort is key; we’ll only get photos that feel true to you if you’re comfortable to be yourself. If you feel most like you in cowgirl boots and jeans, go for it. If you wear black on a day-to-day basis and that’s what you feel most beautiful in, don’t feel trapped in a box of wearing white.
There are no rules here. And if you need guidance or opinions on what to wear to your session, I’m always here to help.

Your Wisconsin engagement photographer will be the one who’s there with you, guiding you into poses, prompting you two into fun movements. If you’re not comfortable with that person, you’ll never get photos you love.
My approach to engagement sessions is always to put in time to get to know the couple first. I know that being in front of a camera for the first time can feel awkward, so I always make sure to establish a connection before we start shooting. That way, you never have to feel awkward or wonder what to do, because I’ll be there, gently guiding you the whole time.
Grace and Josh followed my poses and prompts and focused more on being connected with one another than they did on the camera being there, and what that created was a gallery that actually lets their love shine. But if they weren’t comfortable with me first to allow themselves to open up, it never would’ve happened.

Grace and Josh’s session was so meaningful and intentional, and I hope that the engagement photo ideas from it helped you zoom in on a vision for your own shoot.
